Transforming Lives Through Volunteer Surgery: The Journey of Anesthesiologist Johannes Quiding Lood
Johannes Quiding Lood, a dedicated anesthesiologist with over a decade of experience, has devoted much of his career to helping patients at Helsingborg Hospital and through volunteer missions with Operation Smile, an international organization that provides free surgeries for children with cleft lip and palate in low and middle-income countries.
His journey with Operation Smile began during his medical training when a classmate returned from a mission in the Philippines. Intrigued by the idea of making a direct impact, Johannes embarked on his first mission to Nicaragua in 2018 and soon became a vital part of multiple missions across the globe, including India and Madagascar.
During these missions, an extensive team of volunteers works together, performing essential surgeries that can change lives. Children, and sometimes adults, are screened for their eligibility and health before undergoing surgery, underscoring the vital need for holistic care as many arrive malnourished. Operation Smile also initiates nutrition programs to ensure patients are in the best condition for surgery.
In many regions where Operation Smile operates, healthcare access is dire. For example, Johannes cited Sierra Leone, home to 86 million people but only five surgeons. "Healthcare queues do not exist because there is no care," he reflects, emphasizing how these missions provide a lifeline in communities with limited healthcare access.
The stories behind the patients are as compelling as the medical procedures. Children who endure stigma and isolation due to their conditions often face lifelong implications. Johannes recounts stories of children hidden away by their families due to feelings of shame associated with their cleft lips and palates. For these children, surgery is often not merely a physical correction but a ticket to social acceptance and a brighter future. "We are changing their entire future; who knows, we might be operating on a country’s next president," he expressed, highlighting the long-term impact such surgeries can have.
The conditions under which the doctors operate often demand innovation and quick thinking. With limited resources, Johannes speaks of his improvisational skills—bringing supplies like shoe racks and duct tape to create functional anesthesia stations on-site, ensuring that he can provide the best care possible despite challenging circumstances.
His humanitarian work has also broadened his personal and professional horizons. Johannes has not only gained clinical experience but also established global connections with fellow volunteers from diverse backgrounds working toward a common goal. The spirit on the missions is characterized by warmth and collaboration as everyone strives to make a difference.
"The contributions of the donors are incredibly important," Johannes remarked, emphasizing that a cleft lip surgery can take as little as 45 minutes and costs around 2400 Swedish kronor. He attests to the power of individual contributions, noting that 80 percent of donations come from individuals in Sweden, effectively mobilizing the resources needed to facilitate these life-changing surgeries.
One of his most poignant memories is from Madagascar—after a successful mission where 127 children were operated on, the team visited the patient village, greeted by an overwhelming display of joy and gratitude. "It was extraordinary. We all walked down this road with a band playing and children dancing—a moment of pure celebration,” he recalled, moved by the realization of the impact they had together.
Johannes remains committed to this work and wishes he could volunteer more frequently, recognizing that such engagements provide profound rewards on multiple levels. "It feels like one of the most meaningful things I do as a human being and as an anesthesiologist."
With organizations like Operation Smile continuing to bridge healthcare gaps in underserved communities, the contributions of medical professionals like Johannes Quiding Lood make an immeasurable impact on countless lives, transforming not just individual futures but also strengthening communities and fostering hope.
