Transport Minister Moves to Requisition Aviation Workers Amid Planned Strikes During Olympic Period
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced plans to requisition aviation workers in response to upcoming strikes on February 17 and March 7. This decision comes as the strikes coincide with the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The strikes have been organized by major trade unions in the aviation sector, protesting against the slow progress in negotiations regarding national contracts.
During the inauguration of an exhibition in Milan on Friday afternoon, Salvini stated that an official document outlining the requisition will be released shortly. This move is part of efforts to minimize disruptions during a significant period for the country.
In recent days, both the ministry and the Strike Guarantee Commission had urged unions to reconsider the timing of the strikes to avoid clashes with the Winter Olympics, which will end on February 22, and the Winter Paralympics set to take place from March 6 to 15 between Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. However, shortly before Salvini's announcement, the unions decided to proceed with the planned strikes, exercising their right to strike despite the government's requests for rescheduling.
The announcement underlines the ongoing tension between the government and labor unions, with workers seeking better terms while the government aims to maintain operational stability during key international events.
