Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio, renowned for her empowering anthem "Rata de dos patas," has sadly passed away at the age of 77. The artist's family announced the news on social media, expressing their deep sorrow and highlighting the impact she had on the hearts of her fans: "With deep pain and sadness, we confirm the passing of our beloved Paquita la del Barrio in her home in Veracruz. She was a unique and irreplaceable artist who will leave an indelible mark on all who appreciated her music."

The family did not provide further details regarding the cause of her death. Born on April 2, 1947, in Veracruz, Paquita la del Barrio was an iconic figure in the Mexican regional music genre, known for her bold lyrics and defiance against male dominance in her songs. One of her most famous tracks, "Rata de dos patas," released in 2000, became a symbol of empowerment for women.

In their statement, her family requested privacy, stating, "In this moment of great pain, we respectfully ask all media and public opinion to give us space and understanding so that her family can grieve in privacy and peace."

Paquita's real name was Francisca Viveros Barradas. Throughout her illustrious career, spanning over five decades, she became a household name not just for her music but also for her strong feminist stance. Known as the Queen of the People or the Guerrilla of Bolero, her songs vigorously criticized macho culture, resonating deeply with many listeners.

Her musical journey started in the 1970s, when she formed the duet Las Golondrinas alongside her sister Viola. In 1984, she released her first album, "El Barrio de los faroles," which solidified her place in the music industry and earned her the beloved nickname of Paquita la del Barrio. Since then, her popularity surged, leading to her establishment of Casa Paquita, a restaurant and performance venue that drew famous artists and musicians alike, including Joaquín Sabina and Luis Miguel.

Some of her most prominent songs include "Tres veces te engañé," "El consejo," "Las mujeres mandan," "Viejo rabo verde," "Hombres malvados," and "Pobre pistolita." In 2021, she was honored with the Artistic Career Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami, recognizing her significant contributions to Latin music and her influence in the genre.

In addition to her musical career, Paquita ventured into politics in 2021, running for a local deputy position in Veracruz under the opposition party Movimiento Ciudadano (MC).
