Trump Accuses Iran of Resuming Nuclear Ambitions Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Talks
US President Donald Trump has once again accused Iran of making strides in its nuclear program, despite ongoing diplomatic talks aimed at curbing the country’s ambitions. In his recent State of the Union address, Trump asserted that Iranian officials are once again pursuing their 'sinister ambitions,' a claim that has sparked renewed speculation regarding potential military actions in the near future.
Trump stated, 'They want a deal, but we have not yet heard those secret words. We will never possess a nuclear weapon.' He reiterated his stance that previous US airstrikes effectively crippled key components of Iran's nuclear infrastructure, suggesting that Iran desires to restart its initiatives in this area.
Contrary to Trump’s assertions, the Iranian regime continues to maintain that its nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi addressed the allegations, emphasizing via social media: 'Iran will never develop a nuclear weapon under any circumstances.'
In the wake of escalating tensions, the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East. Notably, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with advisor Jared Kushner, is scheduled to convene with Iranian representatives in Geneva on Thursday for another round of negotiations.
While Trump has consistently mentioned military options as a consideration should talks falter, he has also conveyed a preference for diplomatic resolution. However, public statements from various government officials within the US have shown mixed messages regarding the specific goals of the ongoing negotiations.
Araghchi stated that while an agreement is within reach, it hinges on prioritizing diplomacy: "An agreement is within reach but only if diplomacy is prioritized."
Adding to the complexity, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed that Iran is reportedly on a trajectory to develop intercontinental missiles capable of reaching the United States. He noted that previous missile capabilities of Iran are now being enhanced, stating to reporters in St Kitts and Nevis, "It is clear that Iran is on a path to one day being able to develop weapons that could reach the US."
Rubio expressed concern over Iran's ability to fund its missile program, stating that despite facing significant economic challenges and sanctions, the regime continues to invest in extending their missile ranges. "This is an intolerable threat," he emphasized.
As negotiations draw closer, Rubio reiterated confidence that diplomatic solutions remain a viable path. He stated, "President Trump prefers diplomatic solutions,” and reassured that the third round of talks, referred to as the next opportunity for discussion, would focus primarily on Iran’s controversial nuclear activities. However, he highlighted a significant hurdle in the negotiations: Iran's refusal to discuss its ballistic missile program, which he described as a major issue.
As both nations prepare for further talks, the global community watches closely, uncertain of the outcomes and potential ramifications of this ongoing conflict.
