Trump Deploys National Guard Amid Escalating Protests Against ICE in California
In response to escalating protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in California, President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of at least 2,000 National Guard soldiers to restore order, despite opposition from Governor Gavin Newsom. This controversial move comes as protests erupted in Los Angeles against ICE's operations targeting undocumented migrants. Demonstrators argue that recent enforcement actions, which included the detention of individuals without proper documentation, have crossed a line.
The protests began on Friday, with demonstrators expressing anger over ICE's aggressive deportation tactics. The White House has characterized these actions as standard deportation procedures, viewing the protests as a significant escalation. Reports indicate that some demonstrators clashed with security forces, throwing rocks and using tear gas, while law enforcement responded with rubber bullets and riot gear.

Trump's rhetoric has further inflamed the situation. Just prior to the announcement of the National Guard deployment, he threatened that if local officials did not manage the protests adequately, the federal government would intervene. In a derogatory post on social media, Trump referred to Newsom using a mocking term, which highlights the political undercurrents of this dispute, given Newsom's prominence in the Democratic party and potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections.
The National Guard, a reserve military unit, is unique in that it typically operates under the state governor's control for local emergencies.
