Trump Expresses Support for European Peace Troops in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Negotiations
In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he does not oppose the deployment of European peace troops to Ukraine as part of a potential agreement with Russia aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the region. "Having troops there would be fine, I would not oppose it at all," Trump remarked during a press briefing. He expressed his approval of the initiative, particularly if countries like France or the United Kingdom lend their support.
However, Trump made it clear that American troops would not be involved in this potential peacekeeping mission, highlighting, "We wouldn't have any because we are very far away," while speaking from his luxury residence at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
When pressed about the idea of withdrawing all US troops from Europe as a conciliatory gesture to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump noted that such a proposal had not been raised with him. Despite this, he conveyed optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations between US and Russian delegations, which took place in Saudi Arabia with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in attendance. Trump stated, "Russia wants to do something. They want to stop this wild barbarity."
The dialogue surrounding peace in Ukraine is gaining traction, as it was revealed that the leaders of the United Kingdom and France are in discussions about deploying European peacekeeping forces. Trump described this potential action as a "beautiful gesture." French President Emmanuel Macron recently convened a meeting in Paris with leaders from Spain, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Denmark, along with officials from the European Union and NATO, to formulate a European strategy regarding Ukraine ahead of the upcoming peace talks led by the United States.
Nevertheless, the leaders appeared divided on the wisdom of considering a European troop deployment to Ukraine at this stage. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov weighed in on Tuesday, calling the deployment of European troops "unacceptable" and warning that they are all NATO members.
In addition to discussions of peacekeeping, Trump also suggested that elections should be held in Ukrainian territory. He pointed out that the approval rating of Ukrainian leadership is alarmingly low, stating, "The leader of Ukraine – I hate to say it – has a 4 percent approval rating and it is a country that has blown apart. I personally like him, it's fine, but I don't care about personal things, I care that the job is done well." Trump emphasized that the current leadership has permitted a war to drag on that should never have occurred.
As negotiations proceed, it is clear that both Russia and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to reach a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. However, President Zelensky of Ukraine has firmly stated that he will not accept any outcomes that exclude Ukraine from the negotiating process. As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful solution to the tumultuous conflict.
