Trump Hints at 'Friendly Takeover' of Cuba Amid Growing Tensions
Donald Trump has indicated that ongoing discussions between Washington and Havana could potentially lead to a 'friendly takeover' of Cuba by the United States. His remarks come at a time of heightened tensions due to the U.S. blockade on fuel supplies to the island, and he acknowledged that talks are in progress between representatives of both countries.
Speaking to reporters as he boarded Marine One at the White House, Trump commented on the situation in Cuba, particularly following an incident in which Cuban Coast Guard officers opened fire on a Florida-bound boat, resulting in the deaths of four crew members. He stated, "Maybe we'll have a friendly takeover of Cuba. We could very well end up having a friendly takeover."
The U.S. leader’s comments follow his assertion that the Cuban regime is on the brink of collapse, especially after the military operation that captured Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela earlier this year. Trump believes that Cuba can no longer rely on the aid it used to receive from Caracas, which has been critical during the island's enduring economic crisis.
Furthermore, Trump has enforced an energy blockade on Cuba, threatening sanctions against nations supplying oil to the government in Havana. While he has indicated that talks are ongoing, there has been no confirmation from Cuban officials regarding these discussions.
In his statements, Trump suggested that the economic aspect of these talks would be beneficial to the interests of Cuban exiles in Florida, an essential electoral group for his Republican party. He remarked, "They are in big trouble and we could very well do something good. I think very positive for the people that were expelled or worse from Cuba that live here."
Reiterating his perception of Cuba as a 'failing nation,' Trump noted, "They have no money, they have no oil, they have no food. And it’s really right now a nation in deep trouble and they want our help."
Trump's approach indicates a strategic consideration of U.S. influence in the region, as relations between the United States and Cuba continue to evolve.
