Trump Reveals Plans for Meeting with Putin Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

On Thursday, January 9, former President Donald Trump announced that Russian leader Vladimir Putin expressed a desire to meet with him, and arrangements for such a meeting were underway. Trump made the remarks just days before formally taking office, amid his campaign promises to seek resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has been under Russian invasion since February 2022.

"He wants to meet and we’re setting it up," Trump stated during a gathering with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. He noted, "President Putin wants to meet; he’s said that even publicly, and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess."

Despite his intention to meet with Putin, Trump has not presented any specific plans for a ceasefire or peace deal. Throughout his political career, he has criticized the substantial military assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine, which has totaled more than $65 billion since Russia's invasion.

The incoming president has also frequently ridiculed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, characterizing him as a salesman, while raising eyebrows in Washington by showing reluctance to criticize Putin and instead expressing admiration for the Russian leader.

In addition to his controversial stance on Ukraine, Trump has questioned the viability of continued U.S. involvement in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), reflecting a significant shift in the traditional stance of U.S. foreign policy.

The Biden administration has positioned itself as Ukraine’s foremost military ally, providing vital support as the country continues to grapple with the effects of the war. As Trump prepares to take office, the focus on U.S.-Russia relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine remains a pivotal concern for both domestic and international observers.
