Trump's Discontent with Spain: A Tension Over Defense Spending
US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment in Spain for not cooperating on key defense matters, particularly regarding the US military bases in Morón and Rota, as tensions escalate over the war in Iran. Matt Whitaker, the US ambassador to NATO, highlighted Trump’s frustrations, noting that Spain's recent veto on these bases and its refusal to increase defense spending to 5% of its GDP have led to a strained relationship between the two nations.
"There is no doubt that the president is disappointed with Spain both for the access restrictions to the bases and airspace we experienced during the Epic Fury operations, and for their unwillingness to demonstrate a credible commitment towards increased defense spending," Whitaker remarked.
The ambassador emphasized that all NATO allies had signed a unanimous commitment to bolster defense budgets, and he expects all member states, including Spain, to adhere to this agreement. "They don’t want to pay and want everything for free," Whitaker stated, underscoring the perception that Spain is not contributing its fair share to collective security.
This disappointment was reiterated by Trump himself recently, who mentioned other European allies, including Italy, the UK, Germany, and France, expressing similar sentiments towards their lack of cooperation. "Spain is a complete disaster. They just don’t want to pay anything and expect to benefit without contributing. Spain is not a good team at all," the President exclaimed.
Despite openly criticizing Spain for its reluctance to increase military spending, Trump maintained that his administration does not necessarily rely on their support but would have appreciated a more proactive stance from them in terms of collaboration.
In other news, the President recently declared over a billion dollars in income related to cryptocurrencies, stemming from ventures such as World Liberty Financial and the digital token TRUMP, as outlined in official documents filed with the Office of Government Ethics. This financial disclosure adds another layer to the complex narrative surrounding Trump as he navigates both international relations and personal business interests.
