Two Arrested for Alleged Sabotage of German Navy Ships in Hamburg
In a startling development, authorities have arrested a Greek and a Romanian national for allegedly attempting to sabotage German warships in the port city of Hamburg, as confirmed by European authorities on Tuesday. The European Union's Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, commonly known as Eurojust, announced that the arrests were the result of a coordinated effort involving law enforcement from Germany, Greece, and Romania.
The Romanian suspect was apprehended in Hamburg, while the Greek suspect was arrested in northeastern Greece. Both individuals were reported to be employed at the port of Hamburg, and investigators have not disclosed any specific motives behind their alleged acts of sabotage.
According to the statement released by Eurojust, the attempted sabotage occurred in 2025 and involved several alarming actions. Notably, the suspects allegedly dumped more than 20 kilograms of abrasive gravel into the engine block of German navy vessels. Additionally, they were accused of puncturing the fresh water supply lines, removing fuel tank caps, and deactivating electronic safety switches on the ships.
If these malicious actions had gone undetected, they could have caused significant damage to the naval ships, potentially delaying their deployment and jeopardizing the operational capabilities of the German Navy.
Eurojust also reported that the homes of the suspects in Germany, Greece, and Romania were subjected to searches, leading to the seizure of evidence pertinent to the case.
