UK and France Agree to Deploy Forces in Ukraine for Post-War Security
In a significant diplomatic development, the United Kingdom and France have taken steps to assure the security of Ukraine in the aftermath of a potential peace deal with Russia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this agreement during a gathering of officials from 35 countries in Paris, known as the Coalition of the Willing. The coalition aims to fortify Ukraine against further aggression from Moscow, which has historically opposed any foreign troops on Ukrainian soil.
Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a declaration of intent that lays the groundwork for deploying British and French forces in Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached. This follows a ceasefire, during which the UK and France would set up military hubs across Ukraine and construct protected facilities for weapons and military equipment to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Starmer addressed European leaders alongside US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, emphasizing the importance of these military supports for Ukraine's future security.
The meeting highlighted the collaboration of Western leaders aiming to provide Ukraine with long-term military assistance while addressing security concerns that may arise post-conflict. Despite potential detractors in international affairs, like US actions in Venezuela and controversial discussions about Greenland, Witkoff reiterated the Trump administration's commitment to ensuring peace in Ukraine.
Macron stressed the necessity of solid security guarantees, stating that they are crucial to avoid any perceptions of Ukrainian surrender or renewed threats from Russia. He pointed to Russia's history of violating peace agreements, reinforcing the coalition's resolve to prevent such occurrences in the future.
In addition to military deployment, the coalition members pledged to establish a reliable ceasefire monitoring system, led by the US and supported by other nations. This monitoring is intended to provide assurance and support to Ukraine's sovereignty amid ongoing tensions. The agreement also includes provisions for essential resources to support a Ukrainian armed force of 800,000 troops, ensuring that the nation can defend itself adequately. The previous proposal that sought to limit Ukraine's military was firmly dismissed by Ukrainian leaders.
The coalition's collaborative plan represents a clearer strategy on how Ukraine's allies wish to safeguard its security against future threats. However, Starmer cautioned that achieving a comprehensive peace deal would depend on President Putin’s willingness to compromise. Current diplomatic efforts face obstacles, particularly given recent tensions wherein Putin accused Ukraine of launching attacks—claims which the CIA later deemed unfounded.
The international community remains cautious but hopeful as all eyes are on the negotiations aimed at securing a lasting peace agreement, while the Coalition of the Willing continues to solidify its support for Ukraine against any future aggression from Russia.
