UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Vows to Renew European Alliances at EPC Summit
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was elected premier two weeks ago, vowed to renew relationships with European allies soured by Brexit during the European Political Community (EPC) summit. More than 45 European leaders gathered at Blenheim Palace in southern England to discuss supporting Ukraine, tackling irregular migration, and improving ties strained by the UK's departure from the European Union. Starmer emphasized the importance of resetting relationships, rediscovering common interests, and strengthening bonds of trust and friendship within the European community. The summit agenda included discussions on issues such as Ukraine's security, illegal migration, energy security, and defending democracies. Notable attendees included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, and heads of other European organizations. Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide election win, highlighted the UK's new approach to Europe, emphasizing a more active role in international partnerships and border security. The summit also aimed to reaffirm support for Ukraine and address concerns over irregular migration, with more than 380,000 migrants crossing EU borders last year. Starmer's plans for a new security pact, a veterinary agreement, and an improved trading deal with the EU were discussed during the summit, with hopes to open a new chapter of cooperation. While the EU expressed goodwill towards the new Labour government, any proposals for collaboration would be considered with an open mind while focusing on implementing existing agreements.
