UK Snap General Election: Labour Secures Majority in a Landslide Victory
Vote counting is under way in the United Kingdom's snap general election with 650 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of Britain's parliament, up for grabs. Results show Labour has won more than 326 seats of the 650 constituencies. In the previous election in 2019, Boris Johnson's Conservative Party secured a majority, with the Conservatives winning 365 seats and Labour 203 seats. The SNP gained 13 seats, the Liberal Democrats had 11 seats, and the Greens maintained their only seat. The main parties in the race are the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens, Reform UK, SNP, Plaid Cymru, and DUP. Voting in the UK is done through the first-past-the-post system where candidates need more votes than their competitors to win a constituency. A party needs at least 326 seats to secure a majority in the House of Commons. Before the close of the outgoing parliament, the Conservatives had 344 seats, Labour 205 seats, SNP 43 seats, and the Liberal Democrats 15 seats, with the remaining 43 seats held by nine other parties and independents.
