Ukraine Launches Major Drone Offensive: A Response to Russian Attacks

In a bold move, Ukraine has launched over 350 drones against Russia, targeting several key locations including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and the Leningrad region. Reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense today confirmed that their air defenses intercepted and destroyed 354 fixed-wing Ukrainian drones across fifteen regions, including the annexed Crimean peninsula and the Sea of Azov. The attack on Saint Petersburg saw critical infrastructures in districts such as Kronshadt, Kirov, and Krasnoselski come under fire from what Russian officials are referring to as 'Ukrainian Nazi drones.' Several targets were reportedly damaged during these assaults, resulting in injuries although there were no fatalities reported as of this morning. In response to the escalating situation, the governor of Saint Petersburg, Alexandr Beglov, has established a command post to manage the crisis following the drone strikes, which have increasingly targeted port terminals and refineries in the Leningrad region. Local Governor Alexandr Drozdenko reported that 59 of the drones were shot down during the recent wave of attacks. The air travel landscape was also impacted as operations at Saint Petersburg's Pulkovo International Airport were suspended, leading to delays for at least 29 flights and the diversion of nine others to reserve airports. Meanwhile, Moscow's airports, Vnukovo and Domodedovo, also experienced interruptions in operations, pausing twice during the night due to the threat posed by the incoming drones. Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that 22 drones aimed at the capital were intercepted. EFE reported several explosions heard south of Moscow during the night, reflecting the intensity of the situation. This Ukrainian counteroffensive comes just one day after a significant Russian assault, which involved a barrage of missile and drone strikes targeted at Ukraine's military-industrial complex and critical infrastructure across Kyiv and six other regions. Such attacks were deemed one of the most significant of the ongoing conflict, deploying 73 missiles of various types—including 33 ballistic missiles—alongside 656 long-range drones. Analysis suggests a turning tide in the conflict, as it has been reported that Russia has lost more territory in Ukraine than it has gained since May, with a net retreat of nearly 115 square kilometers noted. Despite recent Russian offensives, Ukraine's advancements in drone technology and tactics are highlighting a change in operational dynamics on the battlefield. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
