Ukraine Under Siege: A Massive Russian Air Strike Shakes the Nation
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Ukraine faced a severe assault as Russia launched a massive air strike targeting the nation’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones were fired by Vladimir Putin's forces during the attack. Thanks to the valiant efforts of Ukraine's air defense forces, around 140 aerial threats were successfully intercepted.
Despite these defensive measures, the strike resulted in notable casualties and damage. A drone attack in Mykolaiv, located in southern Ukraine, claimed the lives of two individuals and left six others injured, including two children. Zelenskyy expressed his deepest condolences to the victims' families, highlighting the unfortunate collateral damage caused by the attacks.
This coordinated strike was not isolated; it spanned all regions of Ukraine, with officials stating that various types of drones, including Shaheds, alongside different missile classes like Zircons, Iskanders, and Kinzhals, were deployed. The focus of this assault was clearly on crippling Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been under constant threat since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
The Ukrainian energy provider DTEK reported severe damage to equipment at thermal power stations, stating that its facilities have suffered more than 190 shelling incidents since the war began. While recovery efforts are underway, many regions are still grappling with power outages and the aftermath of the strikes.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a drone crash in the Udmurtia region of western central Russia resulted in an explosion, injuring one person. Local authorities reported no significant damage but confirmed that the injured individual was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
As explosions reverberated through Kyiv and other areas, local officials reported damage to residential buildings, including a roof set ablaze and injuries from falling debris. The situation prompted Poland to scramble its aircraft to monitor its borders in response to the escalation.
Zelenskyy commended the coordinated efforts of all units involved in the defense, including antiaircraft missile forces and various aviation assets. "I thank them for their reliable protection," he stated, emphasizing the critical role of air defense in mitigating the effectiveness of Russian attacks.
As Ukrainians come to terms with the latest wave of aggression, the focus remains on restoring power and infrastructure while mourning the losses and rallying support in the face of relentless enemy fire.
