Ukraine's Foreign Minister Seeks Chinese Support in Ending War with Russia
During a three-day visit to China, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, expressed Ukraine's willingness to engage in talks with Russia in good faith, emphasizing the importance of a just peace in Ukraine and the global significance of China's role in promoting peace. Kuleba's visit to China, which came as a surprise to some due to China's close ties with Moscow, aimed to explore the potential for Chinese involvement in ending the conflict. Despite previous diplomatic maneuvers that have kept Chinese officials at a distance, Kuleba presented Ukraine's position on negotiations with Russia and highlighted the need for Russian readiness to negotiate sincerely. This visit followed Ukraine's international summit in Switzerland, where Vice President Kamala Harris represented the United States. China, which did not attend the summit, had proposed its own peace plan with Brazil, calling for an international conference with Kyiv and Moscow representation. Kuleba discussed these developments with Chinese officials, emphasizing the importance of direct dialogue between Kyiv and Beijing. In response, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang expressed support for peaceful conflict resolution and indicated that both Ukraine and Russia had shown some willingness to negotiate. Despite challenges to timing and conditions, China expressed readiness to play a constructive role in peace efforts. However, China's support for Russia during the conflict has raised concerns, with Western governments accusing China of enabling Moscow's actions. Amidst criticism from Ukrainian President Zelenskiy regarding China's impact on peace talks, efforts to engage Beijing in the peace process continue, highlighting the complexities of international relations in the context of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
