Ukrainian Forces Target Russian Bridges in Ambitious Offensive
In recent days, the Ukrainian armed forces have taken significant action by destroying three crucial bridges in the Russian region of Kursk. These structures were built to span the Seym River, which connects a vast border area with Ukraine to the broader territory of Russia. The Ukrainian army, which launched its offensive on Russian soil two weeks ago, is attempting to gain control of this strategic area to establish a buffer zone, thereby moving the front lines further away and reducing the frequency of close-range Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory.
The map below highlights the specific area where these three bridges were located. This zone, marked in orange, is centrally squeezed between Ukrainian-occupied territory to the east, highlighted in red, to the right of the map. To the north lies the Seym River, while the southern border of this area adjoins Ukraine.
The initial attacks saw the demolition of the first two bridges over the Seym River over the weekend, followed by the destruction of the third bridge on Monday. Located within this targeted area is the town of Glushkovo, which previously had a population of about 5,000 residents. Many of these individuals have been evacuated in response to the ongoing offensive in recent weeks.
In response to the threat of isolation, the Russian military has swiftly erected two temporary boat bridges along the Seym River. Notably, one of these has already been taken out by Ukrainian forces. The exact number of Russian soldiers currently stationed in this region remains uncertain, with some unverified estimates suggesting that between 700 and 1,000 troops are present. However, these soldiers can still maneuver as long as the area remains accessible.
If the Ukrainian army successfully carries out this encirclement strategy, it would mark a significant victory. It would not only enable further territorial gains along the border but also solidify the buffer zone referred to by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement made this past Sunday.
That said, the outcome of this offensive remains uncertain. Despite recent military actions in Kursk, advancements have been limited, which has caught many by surprise. Additionally, Russia is ramping up its military presence in the region, deploying a significant number of troops, many of whom are youthful recruits with little to no combat experience. The influx of these soldiers could potentially hamper the progress of the Ukrainian offensive, making the situation ever more precarious as both sides brace for what lies ahead.
