Ukrainian Foreign Minister Urges U.S. Leadership in Pushing for Peace Deal with Russia

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha commended U.S. President Donald Trump for his recent remarks advocating for a peace settlement between Ukraine and Russia. Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on January 23, Sybiha highlighted the importance of heightened pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table. "We need U.S. leadership. We need greater U.S. involvement," Sybiha stated, addressing a gathering of global business leaders.

On January 20, just a day after his inauguration, Trump declared his intention to impose additional sanctions against Russia unless it ends its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, although he did not specify which areas would be targeted. He directly addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning of potential high tariffs and sanctions if Russia failed to halt its aggression.

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that there were no significant new developments in Trump's statements. Analysts have suggested that Putin continues to believe he is winning the conflict and has little incentive to negotiate at this time.

During his WEF address, Trump additionally urged Saudi Arabia and its OPEC allies to increase oil production, a strategy designed to lower crude oil prices and disrupt a critical financial resource that Russia utilizes to fund its military operations. Trump asserted, "If the price of oil came down, the war would end immediately."

Further, he expressed a desire to meet with Putin without delay, emphasizing that every moment without dialogue results in further loss of life on the battlefield. "From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we'll leave as soon as we can. I'd meet immediately," he insisted. Trump noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had also expressed readiness to consider a deal to bring an end to the conflict.

Sybiha remarked on the recent strengthening of Ukraine's position, which he believes would stabilize conditions at the front lines. "We are ready to do our part. We really welcome such powerful messages from President Trump and believe that he will emerge victorious. We have an additional chance to achieve new momentum in the diplomatic efforts to bring an end to this war and secure a lasting and comprehensive peace," he concluded.
