UN Security Council Extends UNIFIL Mission Amid Ongoing Tensions in Israel-Lebanon Region
The United Nations Security Council has officially decided to extend the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission until the end of 2026. In a unanimous decision made by the 15 member countries, the resolution also outlines a gradual withdrawal of UNIFIL personnel by the end of 2027. This decision was particularly supported by the United States and its allies, including Israel. However, some countries such as Ireland, France, and Austria advocated for a longer extension of the mission, which also involves cooperation from Italian forces.
The Israeli government has long advocated for the withdrawal of UNIFIL, claiming that the mission has unwittingly provided protection to Hezbollah, the Lebanese political and military group that has frequently engaged in clashes with Israel. Following a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, tensions remain high as Israel has conducted several strikes against Lebanon, citing the need to target sites associated with Hezbollah.
UNIFIL was initially established by the UN Security Council in 1978, with the goal of defining and maintaining the border between Israel and Lebanon, ensuring respect for this boundary, and working toward a stable truce between the two nations. Currently, the mission comprises approximately 10,000 soldiers from 50 different countries, along with around 750 Lebanese and international civilians who contribute to the operation from various bases.
In the autumn of 2024, during a peak period of mutual attacks between Israel and Hezbollah, UNIFIL faced challenges, including assaults on three of its mission bases. Some of these attacks were attributed to Hezbollah, while others were reported to have been carried out by the Israeli military. Notably, an incident resulted in minor injuries to four Italian soldiers.
As the international community closely monitors the situation, the future of UNIFIL and the peace efforts within the region remain uncertain.
