Understanding the WahlOMat: A Guide to the European Parliament Elections 2024
The WahlOMat is a question-and-answer game designed to aid voters in determining which political parties align most closely with their beliefs for the European Parliament elections in 2024. Since its inception in 2002, the tool has been utilized in both national and federal elections, as well as at the European level. How does it work? Voters first provide their stance on various statements from approved parties by selecting agree, disagree, neutral, or skip for each thesis. They can then prioritize their responses based on importance. The WahlOMat then calculates which party programs best mirror the voter's beliefs, allowing for a comparison with the positions of the respective parties. The Federal Agency for Civic Education (BPB) is the publisher of the WahlOMat, operating under the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The BPB's mission is to promote political understanding, strengthen democratic awareness, and enhance political participation through educational measures. The upcoming European Parliament elections in Germany are scheduled for Sunday, June 9, 2024. Eligible voters in Germany must be at least 16 years old, hold German or another EU citizenship, reside in Germany, and have lived in the EU for a minimum of three months. The elections will decide the Members of the European Parliament representing Germany, with 96 MEPs allowed to enter the new European Parliament, the same number as in the 2019 elections. In a recent statement, Chancellor Olaf Scholz underlined the significance of a unified Europe for freedom, democracy, and prosperity in Germany in relation to the European Parliament elections. The legal basis for the BPB's work dates back to a decree from the Federal Ministry of the Interior in January 2001, with the agency having a history that stretches back to 1952. Stay informed about important dates and deadlines for the EU elections to exercise your right to vote on June 9.
