Unexpected Explosions Mar Historic Visit of French President Macron to Syria
At least 18 individuals sustained injuries due to the detonation of two explosive devices in Damascus, the Syrian capital, on a day marked by a significant diplomatic visit from French President Emmanuel Macron. This unfortunate incident occurred near the headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism, coinciding with Macron's stay at a hotel in the vicinity. According to Syrian authorities, including details provided by state news agency SANA, among those injured were four police officers. Preliminary investigations disclosed that one bomb was concealed within a parked vehicle while the other was placed inside a trash can. At this time, no group has claimed responsibility for these attacks.
The explosions took place shortly after President Macron arrived at the Peoples Palace for a historic meeting with Syria's transitional president, Ahmed al Shara. This visit is particularly notable as it marks the first time a head of state from the European Union has visited Syria since the fall of Bashar al Assad's regime in December 2024. The regime's collapse was attributed to an offensive launched by jihadists and rebels.
In images released by Syrian state media, Macron could be seen wearing sunglasses during his reception at the Peoples Palace alongside Al Shara, who previously led the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS). Macron's engagement in Syria signifies a pivotal moment in EU-Syria relations, being the first visit by an EU leader since 2008, when former French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited amid fraught relations following the onset of Syria's civil war in 2011.
It is essential to note El Shara's first official visit to a Western nation occurred in May 2025 when he traveled to France, under special circumstances despite being under sanctions for his previous leadership role in HTS, an organization recognized as terrorist by multiple countries, including the United States.
Macron's visit follows closely after a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Al Shara, scheduled for the same day, in which international discussions regarding regional stability were anticipated to take place, including dialogue with United States President Donald Trump at a NATO summit in Ankara.
According to the Elysee Palace, Macron's delegation, which includes representatives from French businesses, intends to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations with Syria and to address the current regional and international climates. Discussions are expected to cover various avenues of cooperation within a political framework aimed at fostering stronger ties between the two nations.
