Unfavorable May Bridge Weather: Rain and Storm Warnings Across Spain

The May Bridge, a time traditionally marked by the arrival of warm weather and beach outings, is set to take a turn for the worse this year, according to predictions from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Starting this Wednesday, many regions of Spain will need to prepare for heavy rainfall and storms, particularly in the southwestern peninsula and extreme northwest.

AEMET has issued multiple warnings across various areas, indicating significant weather changes. Specifically, rain warnings have been activated in Cádiz, Huelva, and Sevilla in Andalusia, as well as in A Coruña in Galicia. Additionally, wave warnings are in effect in regions such as Almería (Andalusia), the coastal areas of the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca, and Águilas, alongside the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón in the Murcia Region and Alicante in the Valencian Community.

Wind warnings have also been issued for Álava in the Basque Country, and for the Cantabrian slope of Navarra, Burgos in Castile and León, along with storm warnings in A Coruña.

Looking ahead to Thursday, May 1, AEMET forecasts a potential stabilization in the weather across much of Spain, although initial heavy rains are expected to hit Galicia, with lighter and more scattered showers likely elsewhere. The worst-case weather scenario could make this May Bridge feel more reminiscent of Holy Week.

As April transitions to May, the forecast suggests a return to instability. On Friday, May 2, a frontal system moving in from the southwest will bring precipitation to many parts of the peninsula. The central-western regions and the extreme northeastern parts can expect weak to moderate rainfall, while the south of the Central System and the Pyrenees may experience more significant accumulations.

In contrast, the extreme southeast and the Balearic Islands may face lesser chances of rain. These weather predictions highlight the importance of staying updated and preparing for the unpredictable conditions that the May Bridge may bring this year.
