Unidentified Drones Cause Stir Above Belgian Military Bases

For the third consecutive night, drones have been seen flying over a Belgian military base, raising security concerns and prompting investigations. Reports indicate that on Sunday evening, drones were sighted above the Kleine Brogel military base. Local media have highlighted the incident, noting that military personnel at the base observed the drones before a helicopter was deployed; however, by that time, the drones had already vanished, reportedly heading north towards the Netherlands, according to the national broadcaster VRT. The drone sightings were not limited to Kleine Brogel. They also occurred over military grounds in Limburg province on the preceding Saturday and Friday. Defense Minister Theo Francken addressed the situation on Sunday morning, stating that an investigation is currently in progress. He emphasized that the area's overflights displayed characteristics of a targeted mission against Kleine Brogel. Additionally, this weekend, drone activity was reported above other military bases, including Leopoldburg and Marchese-Famenne, as well as near the airports of Deurne and Ostend. This series of drone incidents adds to previous sightings, including last month, when 15 unidentified drones were observed above the Elsenborn military base, situated near the German border. The motivation behind these drone sightings remains ambiguous, with officials yet to ascertain who is behind the incursions. The incidents highlight a growing concern among European leaders regarding drone security. Various unexplained drone activities across Europe have ignited discussions around establishing a so-called 'drone wall' to safeguard the eastern borders, amidst fears that these incursions may be linked to tensions with Russia. As the situation develops, authorities are likely to heighten their scrutiny over airspace violations and bolster measures to ensure the safety of critical military facilities and national air traffic.
