Unions Call for Nationwide Protests Against Social Protection Cutbacks in Spain
On Sunday, February 2, unions CCOO (Comisiones Obreras) and UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores) are urging citizens across Spain to mobilize against the recent annulment of critical social protection measures and the funding for Social Security that were rejected in Congress. This denial was made possible by a unified vote from the Junts party, the Popular Party (PP), and Vox, which the unions condemn as a stark display of political opportunism that imposes heavy costs on the general public.
In a joint statement, CCOO and UGT expressed their unwavering disapproval, emphasizing that millions of citizens stand to be adversely affected. Among those at risk are pensioners not receiving adjustments to their contributory and non-contributory pensions, recipients of minimum pensions, and users reliant on public transport. Additionally, vulnerable individuals facing eviction or anticipated loss of subsidies for basic needs are particularly threatened.
The unions characterized the negative votes by the PP, Junts, and Vox as an unprecedented affront to the social majority, particularly targeting vulnerable populations, working-class individuals, and the broader popular classes. In light of these developments, they are rallying citizens to engage in the upcoming protests and are inviting all social, union, and political organizations that align with these demands to join the movement.
The objective of these protests is to advocate for the approval of a Royal Decree Law and a new package of supportive measures adaptable for the current societal challenges. The unions are currently finalizing arrangements for the mobilizations, including specific locations and times, which will be communicated to the public soon.
As the situation evolves, the push for social justice and the defense of vulnerable groups continues to resonate across the nation, highlighting the importance of collective action in the face of political decisions impacting the livelihoods of many.
