Unity for Peace: Thousands Gather in Rome for Pro-Europe Demonstration

On Saturday afternoon, a vibrant sea of support for Europe filled Piazza del Popolo in Rome as thousands participated in a pro-Europe demonstration. The event was inspired by columnist Michele Serra through his 'Ok Boomer' newsletter in Il Post and was subsequently promoted by the newspaper Repubblica. Attendees rallied not only for political unity in Europe but also to support Ukraine against the ongoing Russian invasion led by Vladimir Putin. Critiques of U.S. President Donald Trump's foreign policy were also voiced, adding depth to the discussions taking place.

Among those present were various political leaders, including Elly Schlein, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Carlo Calenda from the party Azione, and Nicola Fratoianni from Sinistra Italiana. Public figures such as well-known personalities like Corrado Augias, Antonio Scurati, Corrado Formigli, and Paolo Virzì also took to the stage, reinforcing a broad coalition of support. As the crowd swelled, access to the square had to be restricted due to safety concerns regarding the large turnout.

In his address, Michele Serra emphasized the diversity among the participants, declaring, "We are many and we are different." He portrayed the gathering as a positive anomaly in a world that appears fractured, defining it as a 'scandal' of democracy. Serra underscored the importance of recognizing one's fortune, especially in contrast to those risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean or waving flags for dignity in the East. "Europe is not an abstract concept. It is salvation," he stated passionately.

The demonstration reflected a variety of opinions on how Europe should safeguard its values and citizens. Serra pointed out the intrinsic connection between peace and freedom: "The problem is that we all want peace, but peace cannot exist without freedom. No one can feel at peace if they are oppressed, invaded, or subjugated. And we all want freedom, but freedom does not exist without peace. No one is free under bombs or with a gun pointed at them."

Simultaneously, another demonstration occurred in Rome at Piazza Barberini, organized by the radical left party Potere al Popolo. This protest opposed the European countries' rearmament plans and the escalation of military spending promoted by European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen, showcasing the multifaceted political landscape present in Italy today.

These events highlight the ongoing dialogue within Europe regarding sovereignty, peace, and the role of military forces in a continent that grapples with existential threats. As people unite to voice their beliefs, the essence of democracy—debate, diversity, and ultimately, unity—shines through.
