US Approves Major Weapons Sale to Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions
The United States has sanctioned a significant sale of military equipment to Taiwan, valued at over 11 billion dollars (approximately 94 billion euros). This marks the second such decision made by Donald Trump's administration during his second term and represents the largest arms sale to Taiwan to date.
Taiwan operates as an independent and democratic entity, though China continues to assert its claim over the island. The heightened tensions surrounding Taiwan have once again become a focal point in regional dynamics, notably with Japan.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced that the sale encompasses various advanced military systems, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) rocket launchers. These HIMARS vehicles are designed to accommodate a battery of six missiles, offering a substantial range advantage over comparable systems.
This arms deal is part of a broader initiative, aligning with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's announcement of a defense budget increase totaling 30 billion euros in November. As military capabilities evolve in response to regional threats, the US's commitment to supporting Taiwan's defense underscores the strategic alliance between the two democracies amidst growing pressures from China.
