Valencia School Trip Allegation: A Disturbing Case of Sexual Assault
In March 2023, a disturbing incident occurred during a school trip involving students from the private institution Nuestra Señora de Loreto in Valencia, where a 13-year-old student was allegedly sexually assaulted by five of his classmates. The psychological trauma faced by the victim has prompted his family to take significant actions, including seeking a transfer to another school, as reported to the juvenile prosecutors office by the psychologist who assisted the victim.
The incident unfolded during a school excursion to Benalmádena, Málaga, and only came to light in June 2023, several months after the trip, when the psychologists realized the depth of the trauma experienced by the young boy. Following the report, the private school was informed, initiating a chain of events that would see the victim disenroll from the institution, greatly impacting his well-being.
The current status of the alleged aggressors remains concerning, as they continue to attend the same school under the supervision of their tutors. Reports indicate that the school management team, under the Santo Domingo Educational Foundation, has failed to formally acknowledge or apologize for the incident. Instead, they claim to have taken preventive measures to ensure classroom safety, although many question the adequacy of these measures in light of the tragedy.
María Dolores Esteban, general director of the Nuestra Señora de Loreto school, and Julia Moreno, general director of the Santo Domingo Educational Foundation, held a press conference addressing the issue. They emphasized their cooperation with the prosecutors, expressing their willingness to provide documentation and statements regarding the ongoing investigation. However, the preservation of normalcy for students who are alleged aggressors has raised eyebrows as no formal distancing protocols have been enforced by the prosecutors.
Moreover, they acknowledged that despite efforts to uphold a higher teacher-to-student ratio during such activities, the inherent risks remained. Moreno noted that operational protocols have been deployed following the incident but expressed that zero risk cannot be guaranteed in settings where students share rooms.
Despite changes to the rules of coexistence aimed at preventing future incidents, many members of the community are left questioning the school's response and support systems for all involved. The case now sits sub iudice, highlighting the broader necessity for educational institutions to adequately safeguard their students and react effectively in times of crisis.
