Valencian President Carlos Mazón Strengthens Budget Talks Amid Criticism of Central Government

On Monday, Carlos Mazón, the president of the Generalitat, announced a notable agreement with the political party Vox aimed at advancing the reconstruction budget for 2025. This decision comes in the face of mounting pressure for Mazón to resign, following criticisms of his management during DANA, a severe weather event that has significantly impacted the region. Undeterred, Mazón expressed his commitment to remain in office, asserting that he would face both challenges from his party's leadership and unfavorable poll results head-on. "It is essential to provide this region with public accounts that respond to this exceptional moment," he stated, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan support in the wake of the crisis.

Mazón confirmed that he is actively collaborating with Vox to facilitate the passage of the 2025 budget law, and he dedicated much of his address to a sharp critique of the central government under Pedro Sánchez. He accused Sánchez's administration of neglecting those affected by DANA and criticized its slow response in distributing much-needed aid. "The lethargic response that the Government has offered us so far is insufficient. This attitude is discouraging for thousands of families, self-employed individuals, and companies who feel that they are not a priority," Mazón asserted, voicing the frustrations of the communities he represents.

Furthering his critique, the leader of the Valencian PP suggested that Sánchez is more preoccupied with making political concessions to separatist partners than addressing the urgent needs of Valencian citizens. "They are more eager to insult and engage in disinformation campaigns than to respond to those affected," Mazón claimed, underscoring his belief that political motivations are hindering effective responses to pressing local challenges.

Mazón's remarks also reiterated the need for a strategic evaluation of protocols to prevent future catastrophes like DANA from occurring. He highlighted a commitment to improving infrastructure, particularly the construction of hydraulic systems designed to mitigate flooding risks. "Many of us warned that the sectarian policies of the left would be a problem," he added, reinforcing his stance on the necessity of proactive measures.

As Mazón forges ahead with his agenda, it remains to be seen how his agreements with Vox will influence the region's financial planning and how they will address the disastrous aftermath of DANA. His determination to push through the reconstruction budget signals a critical moment for the Comunitat Valenciana, as the region grapples with recovery while navigating a politically charged landscape.
