Vatican Investigates Cádiz Bishop Amid Allegations of Abuse

Luis Argüello, the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, expressed sorrow on Monday regarding the Vatican's formal investigation into Bishop Rafael Zornoza of Cádiz, which lends credibility to allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Argüello emphasized the importance of respecting the presumption of innocence for the Bishop while also acknowledging the pain such accusations bring. During the inauguration of a conference at the Higher Institute of Theology of the Canary Islands, Argüello stated, "The fact that the Holy See has initiated the investigation grants plausibility to the accusation." He urged cooperation from the involved Diocese and reiterated that while the Episcopal Conference is not directly involved, it stands ready to assist in uncovering the truth and supporting potential victims of abuse. When asked about the possibility of Bishop Zornoza's dismissal, Argüello noted that such a decision lies with the Vatican, expressing the belief that the chances of Zornoza's resignation being accepted may be high, especially since he had submitted his resignation over a year ago and is currently ill. "The Episcopal Conference respects whatever decision made by those with the authority to do so," he concluded. This investigation marks a significant event in Spain as it is the first time a bishop is publicly known to be under investigation by the Church for alleged pedophilia. Reports suggest that the Bishop is being investigated for alleged continuous sexual abuse of a minor that occurred between 1994 and the early 2000s when Zornoza was a priest directing a seminary in Getafe, Madrid. The victim had reportedly submitted a complaint to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith last summer after years of silence due to fear. This case adds to increasing pressure on the Spanish Church to confront sexual abuse allegations with greater transparency and rigor. The Diocese of Getafe has stated it has no knowledge of the allegations against Bishop Zornoza and has not received any formal accusations regarding the matter. They expressed their commitment to combat all forms of abuse and to collaborate with competent authorities. The unfolding situation highlights vital issues surrounding accountability and justice in the Church, echoing a growing call from the public to address allegations of abuse thoroughly and transparently. As the investigation progresses, many will be watching closely for developments in this unprecedented case. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
