Violence Escalates in Jenin: Israeli Military Operations Result in Multiple Palestinian Fatalities

On Thursday, a military incursion by the Israeli Army in Qabatiya, located in the northern occupied West Bank's Jenin governorate, resulted in the deaths of seven Palestinians and injuries to eleven others, according to local sources. The operation, described as lasting ten hours, has sparked outrage worldwide, with harrowing videos surfacing on social media detailing the moment an Israeli soldier shot three Palestinians on a rooftop. In the disturbing footage, the soldier is seen handling the bodies roughly, pushing one to the ground while the others are disposed of similarly.

Medical teams reported that they were not allowed to approach the wounded for six hours following the attacks, which has raised further alarms about the treatment of victims. The bodies were subsequently handled by an Israeli Army bulldozer, as confirmed by local sources. In another incident, a drone attack resulted in the death of a young man who was inside a vehicle, while further clashes with troops left several others dead earlier that day. Medical reports indicated that among the injured, a 16-year-old boy suffered a critical gunshot wound to the chest, necessitating immediate hospitalization.

The military operations have led to severe anxiety among nearby school students, prompting the evacuation of about a thousand children from Abu al Rab and Qabatiya schools due to the heavy gunfire. Local journalists covering the incident reported that soldiers retaliated against them with tear gas.

In a statement, Hamas condemned the violence, stating that these military actions will not deter the Palestinian people's resolve or their commitment to resistance. Historically, the Jenin governorate has been a stronghold for Palestinian armed resistance, particularly since the First Intifada in the 1980s. The Israeli government cites the elimination of Hamas and Islamic Jihad members as justifications for its military incursions, yet the toll on civilians, including minors, continues to be significant.

Israel's military operations in the West Bank have intensified since early September, marking one of the largest offensives in two decades. Reports indicate that, in 2024 alone, around 375 individuals have died in the occupied West Bank, which includes East Jerusalem, from Israeli fire—many being militants, but a substantial number also being civilians, including at least 61 minors. In the Jenin governorate, at least 108 Palestinians have been killed due to Israeli fire, solidifying its status as one of the most volatile areas in the West Bank.

The situation remains tense, with discussions emerging around the settler movement, which aims to re-establish settlements in Gaza, a move currently rejected by the Israeli government. As these developments unfold, the international community continues to grapple with the complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the Palestinian National Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, governing under strict Israeli control, despite international recognition of the Palestinian state as pivotal for a two-state solution.
