Violent Protests Erupt Following Deadly Shooting of Quran Protester in Sweden
A man whose actions ignited violent protests across Sweden and the Muslim world has been shot dead in Södertälje, a suburb of Stockholm. Salwan Momika, known for burning a copy of the Quran outside the Stockholm Central Mosque in 2023, was killed in an apartment on Wednesday evening, according to prosecutors. The incident has reignited unrest that surrounds his controversial protests.
Stockholm police reported that five individuals were apprehended following the shooting, which took place around 11:11 PM local time. Officers arrived at the scene to find Mr. Momika suffering from gunshot wounds and he was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
Local media indicated that at the time of the shooting, Mr. Momika had been livestreaming on social media. An Iraqi national residing in Sweden, he had been charged alongside another individual in August 2023 with inciting hatred against an ethnic group, stemming from multiple protests over the summer.
The Stockholm District Court announced that the verdict, originally scheduled for Thursday, would be postponed due to Mr. Momika's death. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that Swedish security services were involved in the investigation, suggesting potential links to foreign powers, reflecting concerns about the international ramifications of Mr. Momika's actions.
