Volkswagen Ordered to Pay Multimillion-Euro Compensation to Former Partner Gaz by Russian Court
In a recent development, a Russian court in Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga has sentenced Volkswagen to a multimillion-euro compensation payment to its former partner, Gaz. The court partially upheld a lawsuit by Gaz and ordered VW to pay 169 billion rubles, which is approximately 177 million euros. This decision, as confirmed by Europe's largest carmaker in response to inquiries from the German Press Agency, is not yet legally binding. The spokesperson for Volkswagen mentioned that the grounds for the ruling are not yet available, stating, 'We will review and assess the grounds for the ruling to decide on any further legal steps.' The legal dispute arose after Gaz sued Volkswagen for compensation earlier in 2023 when VW decided to withdraw from Russia, ending its cooperation with Gaz.Volkswagen had several models of its core brand, as well as its Czech subsidiary Skoda, assembled at the Gaz factory in Nizhny Novgorod.
