Volvo EX90: A Leap into the Future of Automotive Technology
Volvo Cars has unveiled its flagship model, the EX90, a fully electric seven-seater SUV that signifies the dawn of a new era in automotive innovation. This groundbreaking vehicle introduces several industry-first technologies, marking a substantial shift in how cars are built and operated.
One of the most significant advancements in the EX90 is the integration of Lidar technology, which allows the vehicle to perceive its environment with exceptional precision. Unlike traditional vehicles that typically comprise around 200 distinct computers, the EX90 is equipped with just two remarkably powerful central computers, capable of executing an astonishing 275 trillion calculations per second. This not only streamlines the vehicle's operation but also enables continuous over-the-air (OTA) software updates throughout the car's lifecycle. Just like smartphones, the EX90 gets better with time, with enhancements in performance, connectivity, and safety features being delivered wirelessly to owners.
Mårten Wahlstedt, the program manager for the EX90, expressed pride in showcasing such profound technological evolution. "We have made a huge technological shift. The EX90 is the first product that has taken us through that shift. This is not a transition you make every five years rather every fifty years," he stated.
Core computing serves as the backbone of the EX90's innovative Safe Space Technology. This advanced safety system combines radar technology and cameras to actively monitor potential risks both inside and outside the vehicle, ensuring a secure environment for occupants and fellow road users. With the help of Lidar, the EX90 can accurately measure distances and detect objects with unparalleled clarity and precision.
One of the standout features of the EX90 is its driver monitoring system, recognized as one of Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2024. This sophisticated safety feature employs real-time detection to ascertain whether a driver is impaired, fatigued, or distracted, allowing the car to intervene when necessary. For instance, if the system notices the driver is distracted, it will gently nudge them to regain focus. If the initial alert goes unheeded, the EX90 escalates its intervention with more pronounced warnings. In extreme cases, should the driver fall asleep, the car can safely come to a stop and activate hazard lights to alert other road users.
Lotta Jakobsson, a safety expert at Volvo Cars, stated, "All our knowledge and research on accidents is built into the EX90. And thanks to the software constantly being updated, our safest car will become even safer without you having to do anything."
Despite its technological advancements, potential buyers should note that the availability of certain features may vary by market and model. Early production vehicles equipped with Lidar will initially operate in a data collection mode, with the scope for expanded detection capabilities being rolled out gradually as part of the Safe Space initiative.
With a commendable driving range of up to 625 kilometers and energy consumption rates between 205-220 kWh per 100 kilometers, the Volvo EX90 sets new standards in the realm of electric vehicles. Notably, it operates with zero CO₂ emissions while driving, although actual performance may vary depending on driving style and other external conditions. It’s important to remember that while the EX90 is equipped with advanced driver aids, these features are not a substitute for responsible driving.
