Warning Shots Fired by Israeli Troops Amid Diplomatic Visit Sparks Outcry
Israeli troops fired warning shots during a visit by foreign diplomats to the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, May 21, an incident that has drawn substantial international condemnation. The military explained that the shots were fired as the foreign diplomats deviated from an approved route while surveying the destruction caused by months of Israeli operations around Jenin, a known stronghold of Palestinian armed groups.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged Israel to hold accountable those responsible for the incident, highlighting the growing pressure on Israel to allow critical aid into war-torn Gaza, where conditions have worsened under a prolonged blockade.
The Palestinian foreign ministry has accused Israel of deliberately targeting the diplomatic delegation with live fire, calling the act reckless and dangerous. A European diplomat confirmed that the group was in the region to witness firsthand the impact of the ongoing conflict.
The Israeli military stated that the warning shots were a necessary caution to prevent diplomats from entering areas they were not authorized to access and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, emphasizing that no injuries occurred.
This alarming event unfolded as international scrutiny mounted over Israel’s conduct in Gaza, where rescue teams reported that overnight Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least 19 individuals, including a newborn.
The warning shots led to immediate diplomatic reactions. Belgium has demanded a comprehensive explanation from Israel, with Spain reporting that it was coordinating with other affected countries to craft a united response. France indicated it would summon the Israeli ambassador to provide an account of the incident, which French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot deemed unacceptable. Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, echoed this sentiment by calling for accountability and summoning the Israeli ambassador to clarify the situation. Germany, too, stated that its Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul would address this unprovoked incident with his Israeli counterpart.
Egypt branded the warning shots as a violation of diplomatic norms. Ahmad al-Deek, political adviser for the Palestinian foreign ministry and part of the accompanying delegation, condemned the Israeli army's actions as reckless, emphasizing that the diplomats were there to gain insight into the hardships faced by the Palestinian people.
The delegation reportedly included representatives from over 20 countries, including Britain, China, Egypt, France, Jordan, Turkey, and Russia, underlining the international interest and concern regarding the situation in both the West Bank and Gaza.
As diplomatic tensions rise, the incident underscores the precarious balance of international relations amid ongoing violence and humanitarian crises in the region.
