Weather Shift: From Heatwave to Storms in Northern Spain
After last weekend's oppressive heatwave, the upcoming days promise a dramatic shift in weather conditions across the northern peninsula of Spain. As we approach Friday, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) is predicting a wave of instability characterized by storms and significant rainfall in several regions.
AEMET has issued yellow alerts particularly for the interior and northern areas of Galicia. Areas at risk include A Mariña, central Lugo, southern Lugo, interior A Coruña, southwestern A Coruña, interior Pontevedra, and northwest Ourense. These alerts highlight the possibility of heavy rainfall, with forecasts indicating accumulations of up to 15 liters per square meter within an hour. Additionally, the Serranía de Guadalajara shares a similar warning, making it clear that multiple regions are poised for turbulent weather.
The agency warns that a sudden shift in the climate is imminent due to a trough at altitude, which is set to usher in this unstable weather. On Saturday, the instability is expected to persist, primarily affecting northern and eastern parts of the peninsula. The day will be marked by the development of abundant daytime cloudiness, particularly in the interior, with a clearer sky expected in the Balearic Islands.
By Saturday, the situation is expected to worsen, as AEMET forecasts cloudy to very cloudy skies, especially in the Cantabrian region and Galicia. Some low precipitation is anticipated to ease throughout the day. However, storms are likely to erupt in mountainous areas and surrounding regions, specifically in the northern half of Spain, with heavy showers predicted in places like the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian region of León.
As we transition into Sunday, AEMET suggests a notable improvement in stability for much of the peninsula, although the northwestern quadrant will continue feeling the effects of a polar maritime air mass entering from the north. This means the Cantabrian area and Galicia could still experience overcast skies with abundant low cloudiness and persistent weak precipitation.
This significant change from the heatwave to unstable conditions serves as a reminder of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of weather patterns in Spain.
