West Nile Virus Victims Rise in Italy: Health Ministry Assures Public
The outbreak of West Nile Virus continues to escalate in Italy, particularly in the regions of Lazio, Campania, and Piedmont, with reported fatalities rising to 19. The most recent deaths include an 83-year-old man in Caserta, eight victims in the Naples area, and two men aged 80 and 85 who succumbed in Latina, near Rome. Furthermore, a death in the northern region around Turin has contributed to the overall toll, which is now at 19.
All of the deceased were hospitalized in intensive care units, with many having preexisting health conditions, making them more vulnerable to the virus. The health ministry has responded to the rising concern by stating that the situation is currently under control and that there is no cause for alarm. Although new areas in Italy have reported cases that previously went unaffected, officials assure the public that infection and fatality rates are consistent with those observed in previous years.
As the virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, it highlights the importance of public awareness and preventive measures, especially in areas experiencing an uptick in cases. The health ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and emphasizes that the public should remain vigilant but not panic.
