Wildfires Rage in Tarragona: Emergency Teams Fight to Contain Blazes

The wildfires currently threatening the towns of Cabacés and Porrera in Tarragona have kept emergency teams vigilant throughout the night. The fire in Cabacés, which ignited on Thursday afternoon, has dramatically increased in perimeter, affecting approximately 107 hectares as of the latest reports. To combat this inferno, Bombers de la Generalitat has mobilized 62 ground units and 191 personnel, supplemented by six firefighting helicopters that began operations early in the morning.

Wind conditions, specifically the mistral and poniente winds, have complicated firefighting efforts, hampering the teams' ability to bring the flames under control. The Minister of Interior, Núria Parlon, has made a visit to Cabacés to monitor the fire's progression firsthand and coordinate efforts with the firefighters on the ground. The primary focus for extinguishing teams remains on preventing the fire from encroaching upon the ecologically significant Serra de Montsant area.

Simultaneously, the fire in Porrera, which was ignited a few hours after the Cabacés fire, is currently contained thanks to the efforts of thirteen ground units. Although it has not yet been declared stabilized, firefighters express optimism that this declaration could be achieved soon, as preliminary data from Agents Rurals indicate the fire has affected around 18 hectares.

In response to the escalating situation, Civil Protection has activated the Infocat emergency plan and restricted public access to the Serra de Montsant Natural Park. This decision aims to safeguard public safety and facilitate firefighting operations. Furthermore, authorities anticipate the deployment of two additional helicopters provided by the government around 9 AM to strengthen the firefighting response in Cabacés.

As the situation remains critical, emergency teams continue to work tirelessly in their efforts to control both fires and mitigate damage across the region.
