Women of Resistance: Zla Mavka Emerges Amid Ongoing Conflict
In the midst of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, a notable resistance movement is gaining traction among women in the occupied territories. On International Women’s Day, March 8, 2023, Russian soldiers attempted to promote goodwill by distributing flowers in Melitopol, southern Ukraine. However, that same night, an act of defiance took place, representing a burgeoning women’s resistance movement known as Zla Mavka.
Zla Mavka, which roughly translates to ‘wicked forest spirit,’ draws inspiration from Ukrainian mythology, where mavky are supernatural female beings known for enchanting and often leading men to their doom. The movement has reportedly gathered hundreds of members spanning from Crimea in the south to the Luhansk region in the east. One of its earliest acts of protest was a striking visual campaign featuring posters that depicted a young Ukrainian woman in traditional attire smashing a bouquet over the head of a Russian soldier, emblazoned with the slogan, "I don't want flowers; I want my Ukraine."
This creative expression of resistance signifies the broader struggle of Ukrainians as they grapple with the realities of occupation. The Ukrainian government has emphasized that Russia's war poses an existential threat to the state, legitimizing their actions against figures they consider complicit in war crimes.
On another front, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that they had thwarted an assassination plot allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian operatives targeting a high-ranking Russian officer and a pro-Russian war blogger. The FSB claims that a Russian citizen connected with Ukraine's military intelligence agency via Telegram and subsequently retrieved an explosive device concealed in a portable music speaker, which they claimed contained 1.12 kg of TNT. The named targets, however, were not disclosed, and the Ukrainian intelligence agency did not immediately respond for comments.
The discourse surrounding targeted killings has intensified, with Ukraine accentuating the importance of weakening Russian morale while Russia denounces these actions as acts of terrorism.
In other developments, tensions pervade different fronts of the conflict. The Russian foreign intelligence service, SVR, has accused American and British spies of attempting to provoke assaults on Russian military installations in Syria, a claim made without substantial evidence. Additionally, North Korean troops deployed alongside Russian forces are reportedly facing heavy casualties due to insufficient support, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Amid these discussions of military action, the Biden administration has expressed intentions to announce a new military aid package for Ukraine that will include vital air defense systems. John Kirby, the National Security Council Communications Director, insinuated the package would be revealed in the coming days, even as specifics remain undisclosed.
In a potentially positive development amidst the chaos, Slovakia has offered to serve as a platform for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. This proposition was echoed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who signaled readiness on social media. However, Ukraine has criticized this as an attempt to foster Russian interests.
On the energy front, Ukraine has initiated a significant step towards independence from Russian gas by receiving its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. This delivery is perceived as a critical enhancement for Ukrainian and European energy security, especially as key transit agreements with Russia near expiration.
Lastly, amidst the widespread dissent against the war, a Russian court sentenced singer Eduard Sharlot to five and a half years in prison for burning his passport in protest against the Ukraine conflict. His conviction was linked to charges of publicly insulting religious sentiments and attempting to rehabilitate Nazism—a grim reminder of the tightening grip on dissent within Russia.
As both sides navigate a turbulent landscape of military discourse, societal resistance, and geopolitical maneuvers, the enduring quest for peace and stability remains a pressing concern for all involved.
