World Leaders Prepare to Bid Farewell to Pope Francis in Historic Funeral
Pope Francis's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 am in St. Peter's Square, following his passing at the age of 88 due to a stroke. His body will lie in state starting Wednesday at St. Peter's Basilica, where Vatican residents and the papal household can pay their respects. In the days leading up to the funeral, Cardinals convened to discuss his burial plans and the upcoming conclave to elect his successor, as both world leaders and ordinary Catholics gather in mourning.
Historically significant as the first Latin American pontiff, Pope Francis endeared himself to many through his humble demeanor and advocacy for the marginalized. However, he also faced criticism from conservative factions within the Church due to his outspoken views on capitalism and climate change. His final public appearance was marked by an Easter blessing and a popemobile tour, drawing cheers from a supportive crowd in St. Peter's Square.
U.S. President Donald Trump is among the confirmed attendees, despite previous tensions between him and the pontiff over issues like immigration policy. Trump expressed in a social media post, 'We look forward to being there,' attending alongside his wife, Melania. Other attendees from the Americas include Argentina’s President Javier Milei, who praised the Pope’s insights despite their politically complex relationship, and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has acknowledged the Pope’s critiques of economic injustice.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also attend, marking the occasion with global significance, while India has declared three days of state mourning. Italy has extended its mourning period to five days, indicative of the Pope’s profound impact as a religious leader.
European representation at the funeral is extensive, with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and various national leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Spanish King Felipe VI, confirming their presence. Both French President Emmanuel Macron and the Presidents of Poland and the Baltics are also expected to attend.
In addition, dignitaries from the Czech Republic, Moldova, and beyond will pay their respects. Notably absent from the ceremony will be Russian President Vladimir Putin, due to an existing ICC arrest warrant against him.
People from diverse backgrounds—including current world leaders and previous political figures—are expected to join together to honor the legacy of Pope Francis. His death not only marks a significant moment in the history of the Catholic Church but also underscores the global impact of his message on social justice and environmental stewardship. As preparations unfold, the world prepares to say its final goodbye to a beloved figure who championed a more just and equitable world.
