Xi Jinping Advocates Strengthening Regional Ties Amidst Escalating US-China Trade War
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of strengthening strategic relationships with neighboring countries during his first public engagement since the announcement of increased tariffs by Donald Trump, which have now reached 104%. At a work meeting convened on Wednesday, Xi outlined his vision for managing regional differences to enhance collaboration in supply chains, as reported by the state-run Xinhua News Agency. He emphasized that relations with neighboring countries are at their most favorable level in modern history, yet acknowledged that China is entering a critical phase intertwined with shifts in regional and global dynamics.
Xi's diplomacy with neighboring nations will focus on building a community of shared future, advocating for joint efforts in prosperity. The Chinese leader stressed the need for China to adopt a neighborly approach grounded in friendship, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusivity. He underscored the importance of supporting regional nations in maintaining their developmental trajectories while adeptly handling conflicts and differences.
"We need to build a high-level interconnection network and strengthen cooperation in industrial and supply chains," Xi insisted, while also calling for joint efforts to maintain regional stability, security, and law enforcement cooperation.
Despite the intense backdrop of the ongoing trade war, Xi made no direct reference to the United States during his remarks. The US President's tariffs, which have recently escalated, have been met with a firm refusal from Beijing to concede to such economic pressures. On the same day as Xi's meeting, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce reinforced its commitment to respond decisively if the US continues to impose trade restrictions. The Ministry's statement emphasized that there are no winners in a trade war and reiterated China's stance that it will act to protect its interests and rights.
In an indicative white paper on its economic relations with the US, published coincidentally with Xi's meeting, China argued that both nations present opportunities for each other rather than threats and called for the elimination of unilateral tariffs imposed by the US. The document highlighted Beijing's willingness to engage in equal dialogue to address key bilateral trade issues, emphasizing the necessity of cooperation.
In further remarks, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, affirmed that the rights to development of the Chinese populace are non-negotiable and cannot be undermined. He noted that China remains resolute in defending its interests against any hegemonic practices by Washington and that retaliatory measures will be taken if necessary.
As the situation evolves, it remains critical for both countries to navigate their fraught relationship through dialogue and mutual respect, according to Chinese officials, who have continually called for an equal partnership moving forward. However, with the recent tariffs and pressures imposed by the US, tensions are likely to continue, presenting significant challenges for diplomatic resolution.
