Zelensky Claims Presence of Chinese Soldiers Fighting for Russia in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that at least 155 Chinese soldiers are reportedly fighting alongside the Russian army in Ukraine. According to Zelensky, these soldiers appear to have enlisted independently, with their recruitment driven by social media announcements that call for mercenaries.
This claim marks the first confirmation of Chinese military personnel in the conflict, following Zelensky's announcement made on Tuesday. He noted that Ukrainian forces have captured two Chinese soldiers, raising questions about Beijing's involvement in the war. Currently, there is no evidence suggesting a formal agreement between Russia and China for a significant troop deployment akin to the arrangement between Russia and North Korea, which has sent over 10,000 soldiers to the Russian regions such as Kursk to reclaim territories occupied by Ukraine.
Throughout the conflict that has spanned over three years, soldiers from various nations have participated in battles alongside both Ukrainian and Russian forces. In recent years, China has faced numerous accusations of providing indirect support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, notably through the production and sale of military weapons. However, until Zelensky's disclosure this week, the active deployment of Chinese soldiers had not been anticipated.
The Chinese government has consistently denied any involvement in the Ukraine war, emphasizing its stance of neutrality. As the global community continues to scrutinize the dynamics of international military involvement in Ukraine, the revelations about Chinese soldiers complicate the already intricate landscape of the conflict.
