Zelensky Critiques US Envoy's Alignment with Kremlin Narrative as Leaders Gather in Paris

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke out on Wednesday about the US presidential envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, expressing concerns that Witkoff frequently subscribes to the Kremlin's narrative. During an interview with France 2, while in Paris, Zelensky noted, "Witkoff accepts the Kremlin's narrative too often." He warned that such acceptance could undermine the pressure exerted on Russia amid the ongoing conflict.

This commentary came following Zelensky's discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and just before a significant summit involving leaders and representatives from 31 countries, including EU and NATO officials. The meeting aims to bolster support for Ukraine, particularly in light of a potential peace agreement. "We want peace; we hope tomorrow's meeting can advance it," Zelensky stated, emphasizing the complexities of the situation as Russia continues to target civilian areas with military strikes.

Despite proposals from Kyiv and Washington for a 30-day ceasefire aimed at resuming negotiations, Zelensky pointed out that Russia has yet to accept the terms. He stressed the importance of monitoring compliance with any peace agreement, using the example of preventing Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian civilians. He further indicated that a decision from the United States regarding compliance oversight is anticipated.

In denouncing Russia's tendency to veto key European security decisions, Zelensky reiterated his support for utilizing over 200 billion euros in frozen Russian assets within the EU to supply weapons for Ukraine's defense efforts.

The summit in Paris, convened by Macron, will include high-ranking officials from Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, NATO, and the EU, as well as representatives from Canada and Australia. The meeting is set to begin at 10:00 AM local time and will last approximately four hours. Following the discussions, Macron will hold a press conference to outline the outcomes of the gathering.

The meeting's objectives, as disclosed by Macron, include ensuring immediate military support for Ukraine to enable its ongoing resistance, facilitating the groundwork for a steadfast ceasefire, and establishing long-term backing for the Ukrainian military. Additionally, the agenda will discuss the proposition of deploying an international military force, primarily as a deterrent rather than frontline engagement.

Macron underscored the importance of maintaining the situation on the battlefield until a viable peace agreement can be crafted. Both he and Zelensky concurred that it is premature to consider lifting international economic sanctions against Russia before a peace deal is solidified.

The Paris summit is particularly timely, as many Western nations recognize the necessity for assertive action given the perceived disconnection from the traditional support for Ukraine during the Trump Administration. As the discussions progress, the international community's consensus on supporting Ukraine remains pivotal in this critical phase of the conflict.
