Zelensky Denounces Russian Drone Attack on Chernobyl, Assures No Radiation Increase

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned a recent attack by a Russian drone, which targeted a protective structure at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine. The incident occurred just hours before Zelensky's scheduled meeting with US Vice President JD Vance. The drone, reportedly loaded with explosives, struck an essential containment structure aimed at preventing radiation leaks. Despite the considerable damage inflicted by the attack, Zelensky assured that radiation levels have remained stable and unchanged.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Zelensky emphasized the significance of the protective infrastructure, which was developed collaboratively by Ukraine and several countries across Europe and beyond, including the United States. He pointed out that Russia is the only nation that perpetrates assaults on such critical facilities, occupies nuclear power plants, and engages in warfare without considering the dire consequences for global safety.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the drone strike's impact on the New Safe Confinement (NSC) structure at Chernobyl but added that no radiation leaks had been detected thus far. The agency indicated that there were currently no signs of a breach within the inner containment of the NSC, with radiation levels both inside and outside the plant reported as normal and stable. Additionally, there have been no reports of casualties resulting from this attack.

The IAEA is actively monitoring the situation and has stated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of nuclear facilities during these challenging times. This incident not only raises concerns regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine but also highlights the broader implications for international security, especially concerning nuclear safety and disaster prevention.

Zelensky's strong denunciation of Russia's actions reinforces Ukraine's urgent call for international support and vigilance in the face of reckless military aggression that jeopardizes not just Ukrainian lives, but potentially the safety of all humanity.
