Zelensky Urges Lasting Peace Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the need for a sustainable peace with Russia during a recent meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The discussions, which took place in Paris alongside French leader Emmanuel Macron, centered on the nearly three-year war that has devastated Ukraine, causing thousands of deaths and displacing millions.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine requires a just and enduring peace, one that cannot easily be undermined by Russia in the future, as has been the case in the past. He stated on social media, "Ukrainians want peace more than anyone else. Russia brought war to our land and it is Russia that most seeks to disrupt the possibility of peace."

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged the human toll of the conflict, revealing that approximately 43,000 Ukrainian troops have died and 370,000 have been wounded since the war's inception. While both sides have endured significant losses, he asserted that peace must be both permanent and reliable.

Although Zelensky did not disclose specific details of the proposed negotiations, a senior Ukrainian official shared that key conditions were discussed, stressing the importance of guarantees for a reliable peace. However, the Kremlin accused Ukraine of resisting negotiations, insisting that its conditions for peace, which include the recognition of four occupied regions, remain unchanged.

In the lead-up to the meeting, Trump had called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the urgent need for dialogue, stating that "too many lives are being needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed."

Despite the promise of negotiations, the situation in eastern Ukraine remains dire, with ongoing hostilities and recent territorial gains by Moscow. A recent attack in the Donetsk region reportedly resulted in civilian casualties, further complicating the already tense environment.

Residents in frontline areas such as the village of Osynovo expressed cautious hope that the meeting between Zelensky and Trump could lead to a resolution. Mykola Lytvynov, an 80-year-old villager, conveyed his desire for an end to the fighting, particularly for the safety of his sons who are currently serving in the military.

As the world watches, the uncertainty surrounding U.S. foreign policy under Trump raises concerns within Ukraine. Many fear possible concessions to Russia that could leave the nation vulnerable as it seeks a path toward lasting peace.
