Zelenskyy Acknowledges Ukrainian Operations in Belgorod as Tragedy Strikes Kryviy Rih

In a significant escalation of the conflict, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed, for the first time, that Ukrainian troops are engaged in military operations within Russia's Belgorod region. This comes amidst mourning in Ukraine for the lives lost in a recent devastating Russian airstrike that claimed the lives of several children. On April 8, funeral services were held in Kryviy Rih for three-year-old Timofiy and seven-year-old Arina, two of the twenty victims, among them nine children, who perished in the deadly attack. The deceased ranged in age from 3 to 79, highlighting the wide-reaching tragedy of the incident.

Mourners gathered in Kryviy Rih, walking past portraits of the children as church bells toll mournfully, commemorating the victims of what Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul described as the most deadly strike yet in the course of Russia's three-year war on Ukraine. In the aftermath of this attack, which used cluster munitions, Zelenskyy has called for increased international pressure on Russia in a bid to mitigate further assaults on civilians. UN human rights chief Volker Turk has condemned the reckless disregard for human life demonstrated in these strikes.

In his nightly address, Zelenskyy echoed the reports of Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskiy, confirming that Ukrainian forces maintain a presence not only in Belgorod but also in adjacent regions like Kursk. Zelenskyy emphasized that operations in these border areas are justified, noting that the 'war must return to where it came from.' The governor's assertion underscores Ukraine's ongoing focus: to protect its territories in Sumy and Kharkiv from Russian occupiers.

Previously, Zelenskyy hadn’t disclosed operational details regarding incursions into Russian territory. However, his commendation of Ukraine's 225th Assault Regiment, recognized for their performance in Belgorod, reflects a shift in Ukraine's military strategy and communication.

Russian military bloggers have reported clashes within the Belgorod region, prompting heightened scrutiny of Moscow's narrative regarding its military engagements. In response to the allegations surrounding the Kryviy Rih attack, Moscow has denied targeting civilian locations, despite overwhelming evidence documenting daily attacks on numerous Ukrainian cities. Interestingly, it has been revealed that the supposed military target struck by Russian fire during the Kryviy Rih attack was, in fact, hosting a beauty forum and a birthday party, not a military meeting as claimed by Russian authorities.

As the conflict persists, the international community watches closely. Following diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine has tentatively accepted a proposal for a thirty-day ceasefire from the United States, while Russia continues to deliberate on the terms. Despite these discussions, drone and missile exchanges between the two nations continue nearly every night, indicating an ongoing and intense battle ahead.

As Ukraine lays to rest its youngest victims amidst the horrors of war, the calls for accountability and peace grow louder, contrasting sharply with the reality of continuing violence. The lives lost remind the world of the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict that has upended countless lives and families.
