Zelenskyy Warns of Ukrainian Response as Russia Escalates Attacks Ahead of Victory Day

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine's course of action regarding Russia's upcoming Victory Day parade will depend on the situation tonight and tomorrow. In a poignant evening address on Wednesday, he sent a clear warning to Moscow, emphasizing that Kyiv is prepared to retaliate against Russian aggression, which has intensified rather than waned amid calls for a ceasefire. As of Wednesday, Zelenskyy accused Russia of disregarding Ukraine's efforts for peace, claiming the Kremlin has responded to ceasefire proposals only with incessant strikes throughout the country. "Depending on the situation tonight and tomorrow, we will also determine our entirely justified responses," Zelenskyy remarked, underlining the urgency of the situation. He reiterated that Ukraine had clearly laid out a proposal for a ceasefire, asking Moscow to engage in dialogue on the terms, yet the response has been alarming. Earlier this week, Russia announced an intention to implement a two-day truce coinciding with its Victory Day festivities on May 9. In turn, Ukraine proposed a ceasefire effective from midnight on May 6, asserting that this timeframe could adequately test the possibility of an actual pause in hostilities. Tragically, the proposal was swiftly undermined; within the first 10 hours of Ukraine's proposed truce, Russian forces violated it 1,820 times, launching attacks on civilian targets, including drone strikes. One such attack occurred early Wednesday morning when Russian forces struck a kindergarten in the northern Sumy region, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, although fortunately no children were present at the time. The rejection of Ukraine's ceasefire initiatives puts the spotlight on Russia's Victory Day, an annual celebration marking the end of World War II, which has been increasingly intertwined with Russia's narrative surrounding its invasion of Ukraine. This year, the Kremlin has opted for a scaled-back parade, reportedly excluding military hardware from the display due to fears of potential Ukrainian retaliation. Further complicating matters, Russian-installed authorities in annexed Crimea have canceled their Victory Day celebrations altogether, citing safety concerns. Ukrainian forces have previously demonstrated their capabilities by targeting significant military industrial sites far beyond the frontline, with a recent strike occurring about 1,000 kilometers inside Russian territory. As the saga unfolds, all eyes will be on both the Ukrainian and Russian responses in the coming days, with the potential for escalation looming amidst ongoing violence.
